Wonderful Wednesday!

Good afternoon everyone,

We began the day with circle time and discussed what we did the night before. We also talked about our upcoming trip to the zoo next week and how excited we all are to go!

Following this, we worked on some "colour by numbers" worksheets in order to better our numeracy skills and knowledge. After these worksheets, we went to the gym to practice our song for the upcoming Arts Night (Wednesday, June 6 at 7 PM in the main gym). We practiced until lunch time!

After our yummy pizza lunch, we had gym and then came back to the classroom to practice a little more. Following this, we had french class and then second lunch. After second lunch, we finished the day with centre activities, which included weaving, file folder activities, free drawing and playing with rescue heroes.

A few reminders, which can also be found in your child's agenda:

The Day of the Science Fair!

Good afternoon everyone,

We began the day with circle time. After this, we reviewed what we learned about density, using our science experiment as an example. As a class, we went over our hypothesis, materials, procedure and  conclusion. We did this until lunch, which began a little earlier today because of the science fair.

After lunch, we worked on a few letters worksheets and also on some worksheets that worked on our fine motor skills. We had another lunch and then French class. After French, we went to present our science project in front of parents, students and judges. This went very well. We also got to see all the different experiments conducted by other students.

When we finished, we came back to the classroom, had story time and silent reading until home time.

A reminder that ALL FIELD TRIP FORMS/MONEY (including parent volunteer money - $15) are DUE by THIS FRIDAY!!!!

Have a wonderful night!!

Happy International Travel Day!

Good afternoon everyone,

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for bringing in a food item for our special day. Everything tasted amazing and the food selection was so diverse. Although it was a first for many students to try foods of different cultures, they enjoyed it very much.

We began the day with language and worked on the letter Yy.

Following this, we began International Travel Day. Our first activity was our travel to Hawaii. There, we made grass skirts. They turned out great!

Next, we travelled to Italy and made some yummy looking pasta necklaces!

Following lunch, we experienced yummy foods from different countries. For example, gatia and sev from India, Spanish Empanadas, shrimp and pork dumplings from China, spinach fritatta from Brazil, ham and egg sushi from Korea, vegetable samosas from Pakistan, and cheese pizza from Italy.

Everything was sooo yummy!

After this, we had French and Music class.

Following second lunch, we travelled to Brazil to play soccer. Following this, we came back inside and decorated our own flags from Kenya... where Miss H. was born and resided for half her life!

Again, thank you all for making this day happen... we couldn't have done it without each of you!

Have a great long weekend :)

A reminder: Toronto Zoo field trip forms/money are due NEXT Friday!

Tuesday 15 May 2012

Hello everyone,

We began the day with circle time and discussed what we did on the previous day. Following this, we put on our lab coats and began a science experiment. We discussed the meaning of a hypothesis, materials, a procedure and the importance of recording our observations. Following this, we began our experiment for the Science Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

We will be basing our experiment on density. We will be testing whether or not oil is more or less dense than water. In this experiment, we put 1/2 cup water in an empty water bottle. Following this, we added vegetable oil until the bottle was full. We added ten drops of purple food colouring, which caused the water to turn purple. Finally, we added an Alka-Seltzer tablet to the mixture. Although we conducted our research prior to today's class, we conducted an experiment in order to support our hypothesis. Our hypothesis is "when we add oil and water to the water bottle, the oil will be on top and the water will be on the bottom. When we add an Alka-Seltzer tablet to the oil and water solution, it will cause bubbles to form within the layer of oil."

The results: As stated, the oil did stay at the top, whereas the water remained on the bottom. After added the Alka-Seltzer tablet, we noticed that the "fuzziness" of the tablet caused purple bubbles to form within the layer of oil.

Why did the oil stay on the top as opposed to mixing with the water?

We learned that oil is actually less dense than water. In Layman's terms, oil weighs less than water does, hence why it remained at the top of the water bottle. After dissolving in the layer of water, the tablets formed a gas, which caused bubbles to rise to the oil layer, taking some purple water with them.

Well, that's enough of a science lesson for today! I hope everyone learned a little from our fun project. Pictures to come soon as we will be doing two more tests this week to validate our hypothesis.

Following the experiment, we recorded our observations in writing as well as with the use of a diagram. We all understood that this is a very important process while conducting an experiment.

This took up a majority of the day. However, we did have french, music, and some centers to conclude our warm, sunny Tuesday at St. Jude's Academy.

Have a great night!

Miss H.

Monday 14 May 2012

Hello!

Good afternoon,

Today we began with circle time and discussed what we did over the weekend. One student got a new scooter and rode it over the weekend, while another student went shopping for a new water bottle. Overall, it seems as though everyone in the class enjoyed his/her weekend!

After circle time, we worked on numeracy and did some counting worksheets. We also did a counting exercise which required each student to collect and count five toys from the toy boxes and to share what they collected in a group circle.

Following this was language and we continued singing a Jolly Phonics song and did two letter worksheets on the letter Ww.

Because it was such a beautiful day outside, we decided to eat our lunch outside. After lunch, we practiced our song for Arts Night and then had French class. Following second lunch, we ended the day with centers.

Rainy Wednesday!

Good afternoon everyone,

Today, we began the day with circle time and discussed what new things are going on in our lives. Some of us went to the Rainforest Cafe lately while another student is getting hardwood flooring completed in his house! A lot is going on in and outside of the JKA classroom!

After circle time, we worked on our letters and practiced writing letters on our own "Cars 2" whiteboard sheets and whiteboard markers. This went over very well. The letters we practiced writing today were A, B, and C. Please continue to work on letter sounds with your child. Here is a good link to a song we've been listening to in class. This song covers all of the letter sounds.

Letter Sounds Song by Jack Hartmann

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy1Kmt9sMOA

We also went for a walk (W for Walk) on this nice day. We looked for things that started with each letter of the alphabet as a group. Here are some of the things we saw:

A: ant
B: bird
C: car
D: dandelion
F: Flower
G: grass
H: house or hydrant
I: insect
L: leaf
P: pine needle
R: rock
S: stick
T: tree
W: weed
Y: yellow flower

Following our walk, we had pizza day. After lunch, we worked on transportation collages. We will continue to work on them tomorrow as well. We looked through National Geographic magazines for different types of transportation and found many pictures pertaining to this topic!

We also had French and ended the day with centers.

A reminder to complete, sign and return the forms for next Thursday's International Travel Day. Also (if applicable) please write in your child's agenda what food item you will be bringing.

Have a nice, relaxing night!

Marvelous Monday!

Good afternoon all,

We started off the week with circle time and shared what we did over the nice, sunny weekend. Many of us were out and about while some of us had the pleasure of relaxing, staying in and watching a nice movie. Following circle time, we got started with math continued to work on our patterning unit. We made and decorated our own maracas out of styrofoam cups, markers and pasta. Following this, as a class, we created different patterns by shaking our own maracas. This was a lot of fun and some students got a chance to create their own patterns for the rest of the class to copy.

We also learned a new letter today, Ww. We sang a Jolly Phonics song on 'Ww' called the "Wind." After singing this, we did a couple of worksheets on the letter Ww.

After lunch, we had gym class and then practiced our song for Arts Night on June 6. We had French followed by second lunch.

To conclude the day, we completed a cut and paste worksheet and also got to create our own still-life portraits of a vase with flowers that was displayed in the middle of the table.

Please read over, sign and return the note sent home today regarding International Travel Day. Please return this form by Friday, May 11, 2012.

Day of the Big Show!!! (Yesterday's Post)

Hello everyone,

We began the day with circle time and then went into an activity that got our brains working for the day. It was a worksheet that required students to match the sea shell to its correct shadow. Following this, students were each given a card that had half of a picture of a type of transportation (i.e. half of a helicopter). They had to go around the class and ask each student if he/she had the other matching card to complete the picture.

After this fun activity, we went to the gym and practiced for the French Cafe. We also made graphs, using "Cars 2" stickers to see how many students have taken each type of transportation (i.e. car, bus, train...). Following this, we went to the gym again to watch the dress rehearsal for tonight's play at 7 pm, Twelfth Night.

Before second lunch, we had French and worked on our new letter, Vv. Following lunch, we worked on our patterns unit and made pattern bracelets with beads and plastic lace. We also did a teddy bear patterns worksheets and did some pattern movements.

To end the day, we prepared for home time and had story time as well.

A reminder that the Twelfth Night play is on in the gym tonight at 7 PM. Please come out and support our students!!!!

Rainy Mondays!

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was nice, but quite busy!

Today, we began with a cut and sort activity that required students to arrange the pieces in order from 1 to 10. After doing this, everyone worked on writing/tracing their names. We used the personalized handwriting practice pages for this. Following this, we had story time and read a book called "Sheila the Brave."

After snack, we had language and reviewed the letters S and T. We sang our Jolly Phonics song for both letters. We also did some letter Tt worksheets and activities.

Following second lunch was gym and then the students looked at different magazines and cut out different images that reminded them of the Spring season. Each of the students glued these pictures and made their own Spring collages. We had french class, which was a second gym in order for the older grades to practice for the French Cafe on May 4.

After second lunch, we had centers. Towards the end of the day, we got our own things packed and ready for pickup. We finished the day with circle time and discussed what we learned today.

A few reminders:

-Twelfth Night is this Thursday at 7 pm in the auditorium. All are Welcome. 1000 house points to each student who attends.
-French Cafe is May 4

Have a superb night!!

Spring Collages

Students are becoming very good at identifying signs of Spring! Over the past few weeks they have completed many activities, such as a weather watch, that have helped them do this. Today students were given the opportunity to demonstrate what Spring means to them by completing their first collage. Students looked through magazine pages and cut out pictures that depicted what comes to mind when they think of Spring.  Each collage was very unique and students enjoyed putting them together!

Have a wonderful evening!

Earth Day Activities

Today Miss H's class participated in several Earth Day activities. After lunch, they joined other SJA students in the school yard to collect garbage in order to help clean our environment. Afterwards, the students completed Earth Day art! Coffee filters were coloured green and blue to represent land and water on Earth. Next, the coffee filters were sprayed with water in order to create a tie dye effect. The students enjoyed both Earth Day activities and learned a lot about our Earth and how they can help keep it clean.

Have a great weekend!
Miss Poland
Hello all,

Today we began the day by talking about various types of public transportation. We came up with many, which include a bus, a train, a shuttle, a taxi and an airplane. Following this, we drew our own favourite types of public transportation.

We also discussed Earth Day and read a book about a boy who celebrates Earth Day by planting new trees in areas lacking them. We talked about different ways we can help to save the planet and conserve our resources for future generations (in a more simplified way however!).

Some of the ways to help our planet are to conserve water (turn off the tap when not using it), recycle all recyclable products, turn off the lights if we are not in a room, ride our bikes more, and throw out our garbage to reduce pollution. We also pledged to do these things on a mini "Lorax" themed pledge sheet.

After lunch, the entire student body went outside to the back of the school to clean up any garbage in order to keep our school clean!!

When we got back, we did an earth day activity with coffee filters, markers and a touch of water. It was a lot of fun. After second lunch, we decided to enjoy our planet and decided to go for a walk to the park with Ms. Chang's class.

That sums up another week at SJA. Happy Earth Day and happy recycling!!!

Patterns Everywhere!

This afternoon students continued their Patterning unit in Math, which we began yesterday. Students learned about AB patterns and how to recognize them. We discussed colour and shape patterns, and students had the opportunity to create their own patterns using colours, snap cubes, and shapes. After some practice, they were able to look at various sequences of shapes and colours, and to determine which ones were and were not patterns. We concluded our lesson with a poem about patterns, which helped students recognize that patterns can be found everywhere!

What a Beautiful Day!

Good afternoon parents, guardians and students,

After our monthly convocation in the gym, where March and April birthdays were celebrated and awards were given, we began the day with circle time and discussed what we did the night before. Following this, we worked on a spring cut and paste activity. We also read a book by Eric Carle called "The Tiny Seed," which also ties into our lessons on the Spring season.

After snack time, we dove right into language and learned a new letter, Tt. We learned that Tt sounds like a tennis ball bouncing up and down. We also sang a Jolly Phonics song about the letter Tt and it's sound. After this activity, we did some letter Tt worksheets. Because it is an easier letter to write, many of the students could write it without tracing it first.

We had lunch and then went outside, on this gorgeoooous day, to record the weather on our "Weather Watcher" chart for the week. We have been so lucky to have gotten so many sunny days this week so far!

We also had math and discussed patterns. Ms. Poland gave everyone the pleasure of teaching this lesson on patterns and everyone did several fun, hands on activities to do with patterns. We also had French and silent reading for ten minutes.

After second lunch, we played "Earth Day" Picture BINGO, which was a lot of fun. After this, we went outside for a little bit and did some letter Tt movements for exercise. These included tapping, tiptoeing, twirling and twisting. Everyone also got to "toss" all of the tennis balls I brought in for the letter Tt. We had a little extra time, so I thought it would be fun to let all the students blow their own bubbles with their own bubble bottles I handed out. Overall, it was a great day for all the students in JKA.

A reminder that tomorrow is Earth/Spirit Day. Please dress your child in green, blue and/or brown clothing!

Have a good one,

Miss H.

Happy Wednesday!

Today was filled with many enjoyable activities! We began the day by reading a book about recycling in order to prepare students for Earth Day, which is this Friday. Students learned about why we recycle and how it helps our Earth. Next, we learned about the letter s and what sound it makes. Students had the opportunity to practice writing the letter s and to identify words that began with s. After lunch, students headed to gym for some exercise! When they returned, we went outside to observe the weather and added to our Weather Watch chart, which we have been completing each day this week in order to help students identify Spring weather. Afterwards, students listened to a book called "Earth Day Every Day" and discussed why we have Earth Day, as well as how we can help the Earth every day. We wrapped up the afternoon by beginning a new Math unit, Patterning.

Today is a special day because it is Hayden's birthday! We celebrated by eating the ice cream she brought in! Happy birthday, Hayden!

Have a wonderful Wednesday evening!

Tuesday 17 April 2012

Hello Everyone!

Good afternoon everyone,

We began the day with circle time and discussed what we did the day before. Following this, we read a story by Robert Munsch called "Mortimer." We used the car we brought in and drove them around/had car races with each other in there gym. This was a lot of fun!!!

Following this, we used our cars and mud (brown paint) to make tire track impressions all over a big piece of paper. This was a messy, but fun activity for everyone!

After cleaning up, we had snack time and then got into language. We sang our letter Ss Jolly Phonics song and did some worksheets on the letter Ss. For those who finished early, we coloured a sheet with a Squirrel, which also begins with the letter S.

We had lunch and then math, which was based on numeracy.

We had French class and also had silent reading for ten minutes.

After second lunch, we recorded what the weather was like today, as we will be doing this for the rest of the week. We also coloured and put together our own "Rain" mini books for the Spring season. We discussed what we found on our socks (signs of spring) after our experiment running in the park with them on last Friday.

We ended the day by putting together our own backpacks for home time.

A few reminders:

-Earth Day is this Friday. It is also Spirit Day so please come dressed in green, blue or brown clothing/accessories!

Monday 16 April 2012

Marvelous Monday!

Good afternoon everyone,

We started off the day with circle time and discussed what each of us did on the weekend. Many of us had a nice, relaxing weekend. Following this, we did an activity/experiment called "Sink or Float?" We tested several toys to see if they sunk or if they floated. Ms. Poland and I dropped different toys in a bucket of water. Before we did, all the students had to guess whether or not they would sink or float. They either had to go to one side of the room (sink) or the other side of the room (float). This was a fun activity that led to our central topic of types of transportation that float in the water (sail boat, canoe, race boat, paddleboat, fishing boat, ship, cargo ship, etc). We looked and discussed different types of water transportation.

After snack time, we had language and learned the letter Ss. We sang a Jolly Jingles song for the letter Ss and also learned that it makes a "sssss" sound. We did the action of a snake while we sounded out the letter Ss. We also did some letter Ss tracing activities.

After lunch, we had gym. Following gym, we went outside for a couple minutes to look at the weather. We concluded the it was partly cloudy outside and drew this on our "Weather Watch" worksheet. We will be going out everyday this week for a couple minutes to do this activity. By the end of the week, we will look for different weather patterns and graph our results as a class.

We had french and story time. We read "Bear's New Friend." After second lunch, we had math, which dealt with numeracy.

A few reminders:

-Please measure your child's height (in inches) and record it in the agenda if you haven't done so already
-Please return any report cards with comments ASAP
-Please LEAVE your child's toy car in his/her backpack for tomorrow's class!!!!

Have a wonderful night,

Miss H.

Wednesday 11 April 2012

Wowzers... it's Wednesday!

Good afternoon all,

We started the day with a song about transportation called "Twinkle, Twinkle, Traffic Light." Ms. Poland had the pleasure of teaching everyone this fun song about traffic lights and what each colour means. Following this, we read "I Think I Can" about a train. We also did a cut and paste worksheet about transportation.

Following this, we had math, which focused on counting up to ten and also recognizing numbers up to ten. We learned that the number ten can be represented in many different ways.

After lunch, we had gym and then talked about the differenced between two seasons: Spring and Fall. We read a book about Fall and one about Spring called "Mouse's First Spring." On the whiteboard, we compared the two seasons. After, we had French and then came back and completed an activity that dealt with the Spring season.

Following second lunch, we worked on the letter Qq and did a tracing worksheet, sand a Jolly Phonics song and also did some q-tip (Q for Q-tip) paintings. We used q-tips to make dots with paint on a letter Q template.

That concludes another wonderful day in our JKA class!

A reminder:

PLEASE return any report cards with comments ASAP!!!

Have a great night!

Tuesday 10 April 2012

Hello!

Hello everybody,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter long weekend and enjoyed the sunny weather outside. Today, we have a new teacher working alongside Mr. R. and I. Her name is Ms. Poland. She and Mr. R. will be rotating between Mrs. Padovan's JKB class and our JKA class.

After introducing ourselves to Ms. Poland, we started off with language and learned a new letter, Qq. We learned to trace the letter Qq and also sang a song about ducks in order to learn how to sound out the letter Qq. We learned that Qq sounds like "qu", a sound we hear in the word "quack." We also did some crayon imprints with quarters because quarters also begin with the letter Qq. We used pennies as well because last week, we focused on the letter Pp for penny.

Following this, we did math, which focused on counting backwards from the number 5. We had a race in the gym and counted down from 5 (5..4..3..2..1..GO!) and ran. This was lots of fun. We also learned that we also count backwards for space launches and to go to sleep. We also used manipulatives (plastic toy counters) to help us count down from 5.

Following this, we had lunch and then worked on a transportation cut and paste activity. We also had reading buddies with Ms. Chang's 4/5 class. We had french class following this.

After second lunch, we had centers.

A few notes for this week and next week:

-Please bring an old sock (preferably white) for this Friday. This sock will be used for an outdoor activity that will be done on Friday. Since we will be using these socks outside, please bring one that can get dirty!
-Please bring a small toy car, or other small type of transportation, for Monday, April 16, 2012

Have a super, fantastic night!!!

Wednesday 4 April 2012

Wondrous Wednesday!

Hello everyone,

We began the day with circle time followed by story time. We read another great book by Robert Munsch called "Put Me In the Book." We also did a cut and paste activity that was based on modes of transportation. Following this, we continued to work on our Transportation booklet.

After lunch, we had gym class and then continued to work on and finish our transportation booklets. They will be given out tomorrow and should be returned back to school after the Easter weekend. We had French class and second lunch.

After second lunch, we went outside and had an Easter Egg Hunt. In each plastic egg was a letter. Students had to search for the eggs and once we all found one, we each identified the letters found in our eggs. After this, we had an Easter egg spoon race with plastic eggs. This was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed playing this exciting, yet challenging game. After, we came in and had story time and circle time before everyone went home.

A reminder that there is no school on Friday or next Monday.

I encourage all parents/grandparents to attend the French Cafe event on  May 4. The students and Mme. Stella have been working very hard to make sure it is an entertaining and enjoyable event for everyone!

Spirit Dress Up Day is tomorrow. Please have your children dressed in Easter colours (Blue, yellow, purple, pink, green) and pastel colours!

Have a good one!

Tuesday 3 April 2012

Hello!

Good afternoon everyone,

Today we started off the day with a story about a fish who makes lots of wishes. For our unit on transportation, we used the props we made/decorated on Monday to sing the "Wheels on the Bus." Following this, we began working on our transportation book. On our own, we wrote the different types of transportation for each picture on each page. Here is an example of one student's work:

This book, which will be completed by Friday (as there are a lot of pages!) took us until first lunch. After lunch, we did some letter worksheets on the letter Pp. Please look for things at home or outside that begin with the letter Pp. We also had french and music class, when we practiced our songs for the French Cafe event on May 4. After second lunch, we had math and worked on numbers. For this, we learned a number poem called "I Can See 2," which required us to think of things on our bodies that we had two of. After learning this poem, we were paired into partners and had to ask each other how many parts on our bodies we had (how many eyes, noses, mouth, teeth, fingers, toes, feet, hands). Then we drew our own pictures of ourselves with these features. As a treat, at the end of the day we played "Red Light, Green Light" in the gym.

A reminder that there is no school this Good Friday or on Easter Monday.

Spirit Day is on Thursday. Please wear bight colours or pastels for Easter Spirit Day.

Have a great night!

Miss H.

Thursday 29 March 2012

Good Afternoon!

Casual Day began with circle time when we shared what we did the night before. Some of us got to enjoy the fairly mild weather and I went out and participated in the St. Jude's Academy run club!

Following circle time, we began working on some letter worksheets. After doing so, I handed out a "Handwriting Practice" workbook to each student. Until first lunch, everyone practiced writing different letters as well as tracing and writing their names. We are improving much more as time progresses.

After lunch, we finished writing letters and then began working on what we wanted to say and draw on our report card comments. Report cards will be given out tomorrow. Please find them in your child's backpack.

We also had story time, French and Music. After second lunch, we had centers and got ready for home time.

A few reminders:

-Pizza forms/money are due tomorrow
-Term 2 Report Cards will be sent home tomorrow

A Note From Mr. R

March 28, 2012

What a fun day for Jk-A this WednesdayThis morning we started our day with our penmanship practice. We followed by reviewing our unit of inquiry on different kind of transportations.

We followed thru with our entertaining read-aloud on the book entitled “Who Will Go to Kindergarten Today?” a book writing by Karl Ruhman.

Also this afternoon we connected our educational walk with our unit of inquiry by making a checklist of different cars of transportations that we saw along the educational walk. We finished our day by doing some math activity work sheet on comparing the greater number to the lesser number.

Have a great evening everyone!

Good Evening, Parents!

Today, we began the day by reviewing the three units of inquiry we have completed over the last two terms. Following this, we began our third unit, transportation, by brainstorming all the different modes of transportation we have access to. We came up with a lot, which include hot air balloon, helicopter and school bus.

Following this, we worked on tracing and sounding out the letter Nn. After lunch, we had gym followed by story time. We had french class as well and continued to prepare for the French Cafe on May 4.

Following second lunch, we went out on a scavenger hunt looking for different types of transportation in the neighbourhood. After returning with our checked off list, we finished the day with some car number worksheets.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic night!!

Hello!!!

Hello everyone,
First of all, congratulations to our class for winning the Library Book Drive!! We will be feasting on yummy chicken wings in the near future to celebrate this. Thanks to everyone who brought in books to support the book drive and the school!!
We started off the day with discussing the signs of spring (i.e. raining, grass turning green, flowers blooming). We also brainstormed all of the things we thought we would see outside on our walk. Everyone had such good ideas, which included twigs, squirrels, chipmunks, trees, the sun and other fun things outside. After doing this, we set out on our outdoor walk and were accompanied by our fellow reading buddies from Ms. Chang's class. We had so much fun outside!!!
After we returned, we had snack time. Following snack time was story time and then we learned about the letter Nn. We learned about the sound of Nn and also practiced tracing and writing it.
After lunch, we talked about our feelings and discussed being “sad” and “scared” in more detail. We also talked about manners as well in order to perfect our manners around others. We worked on more letter worksheets and then had French followed by music class.
Following second lunch, we had centers. The three centers were tracing our names, sorting (easter coloured pom poms and coloured marbles) and alphabet play doh. That sums up our day!!
Some reminders:
-As of today, uniforms are no longer purchased from Beattie’s, but will now be purchased directly through St. Jude’s Academy. All order requests should be sent to uniforms@stjudesacademy.com
-Grandparent’s Day and French Cafe will both be on Friday, May 4, 2012

Twas the day before March Break!

Hello everyone,

Today was a day purely based on fun. We started off the day with story time and also discussed what each of us will be doing over the March Break holidays. Then, we played some games and had silent reading. We also began the movie "Madagascar 2" until lunch time. Following lunch, we did some letter exercises on the letter Pp and also learned a Jolly Jingles song for the letter Pp called "Happy Birthday Pig." We sang this song and then had French class.

Following French, we had story time again and then second lunch.

After second lunch, we had our last presentation by Leon and got our things ready for home. We watched some more Madagascar with Miss M.'s class and also had some Kernels popcorn to go with the movie!

I hope everyone has a wonderful March Break and the happiest and safest of holidays. For all of you who are traveling over the next two weeks, have a safe and enjoyable journey. For those of you who are lucky enough to relax at home, I hope you make some wonderful memories together with family and friends.

Best regards,

March 8, 2012

What an exhilarating day for the JK todayThis morning the students were able to actively participate in the live Reptile show. Students were fearless in petting and observing these reptiles. Outstanding!

As for tomorrow our final individual presentation of the diorama will continue. Looking forward to hear and learn about their interesting facts on their research.

Hoping everyone is having a pleasant evening.

Mister Rojas

Good Evening!

We started off the day by continuing our summative presentations in order to conclude our unit on animals. Today's presenters were Vishva, Sebastian and Leon. Everyone has done such a terrific job on their presentations and everyone practiced so hard!  I am proud of all of you!!

Following presentations and snack time, we had our reptile show. This was VERY exciting for everyone who watched and participated in it. We got to learn about and see a king snake, a blue tongue skink, a baby crocodile, an albino burmese python, and other cool reptiles. Although this animal is not a reptile, we also got to see a tarantula as well. After learning about these animals, we got a chance to touch and pet each one as well. It was so cool!

Following our reptile show, we had lunch. After lunch, we did some worksheets and activities about the spring season. We also had french and music.

After second lunch, we had story time and centers, which took us to the end of the day.

A reminder that March break holidays are from Monday, March 12 to Friday, March 23, 2012.

Have a fabulous night!!!

Another full house of energetic learners in Miss H class. This morning we began our class with the individual presentations of their unit of inquiry of chosen animals. The students were able to present in front of the class about their chosen animals in the form of a diorama.
Jordan, Ramsey and Kasen shared some interesting information and facts about their chosen animals. Jayden, Emily and Alisha will continue the presentation tomorrow. This afternoon the students were able to display their individual creativity in making a bird’s mask. A colourful mask full of feathers and colors. Just a reminder that tomorrow is Spirit day, and students are suggested to wear as much green and white colors to accumulate more house points.

Mister Rojas

Today is Tuesday!

Good afternoon everyone,

We started off the day with talking about different birds that there are outside and also ones that we have seen on tv, at the zoo, or heard about. These include a cardinal, eagle, owl and blue jay. We did some matching exercises dealing with different types of birds as well. We also traced the different names of birds, some of which include the ones discussed above.

Later, we started our summative presentations. Today's presenters were Jordan, Ramsey, Kasen and Onyi. All of these went very well and I am so, so pleased with all of the different types of media everyone used to present their favourite animals. Great job everyone. Presentations will continue until Friday of this week.

After lunch, we worked on bird masks, which many of you probably saw when the students walked out of the classroom after school. Everyone worked very hard and these masks and they looked great on!

We also did some pattern worksheets and a counting activity towards the end of the day. We also read the "Wheels on the Bus."

A couple of reminders:

-Tomorrow is Spirit Day
-Thursday is the Reptile Show
-Friday is the last day before March Break vacation

Have a great night!!!

Friday 2 March 2012

A note from Mr. R.

Good afternoon,

A prolific Friday for the JK-A! This morning the students and I, along with Miss H went out for a nice long walk around the Argentia circle, an excellent jumpstart for the students to have a healthy and active lifestyle.

This afternoon, we practiced our numeracy through an enjoyable activity of making a necklace with cheerios and counting them after.

Today, we also read a couple of books for the read aloud entitled “I Was so Mad” by Mercer Mayer and “The Magic Hockey Skates” as illustrated by one of my all time favourite children’s books illustrator Michael Martchenko.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and see you all next Monday!

Mister R

Hello!

Good afternoon,

We began the day with a house game in the main gym. For this game, one person from each house was chosen to drink a nice glass of "pig milk," which in reality was just juices mixed together to form a tangy drink. The fastest to drink it without dropping any (hands behind their backs) was the winner. Kappa took home the prize worth one million house points. Great job, kappa!

After, we read a book about dreams and each got to share our own dreams that we have either had the night before or in the past. A lot of us had dreams that involved animals. It must be partly due to our animal unit of inquiry that we are currently in right now!

Because it was a nice day outside, we decided to take advantage of the weather and go for a walk. We did a short walk around the block and had lunch after we came back inside. Following lunch was math (numeracy unit). For this, we made yummy necklaces out of my favourite cereal... Cheerios... mmmm!

You will most likely find these necklaces/bracelets in your child's lunch bag... if they haven't been eaten already!

We had French followed by silent reading. After second lunch, we worked on some letter tracing, had story time and a little time for centers.

A couple of reminders for next week:

-Spirit Day is next Wednesday
-The Reptile Show is next Thursday

Have an amazing, safe and enjoyable weekend!!

Regards,

Miss H.

Thursday 1 March 2012

Good evening all!

Today, on our special Casual Day, we started off by going on a 'letter hunt'. Everyone had to go around the classroom and look for a coloured foam letter and sit down. We each discussed our own letter, its sound and came up with words that started with this letter. I received such a good response from everyone last week playing this game, that I thought I would give it another try today. We did this until we went through every letter in the alphabet.

Following this, we sang our letter sounds song and practiced saying the sounds of each letter. After first lunch, we talked about the differences between reptiles and mammals. I asked students to tell me different types of animals that are either reptiles or those that are mammals. After reviewing this, each student was required to cut out different animals and glue them into one of two correct boxes: 1) reptiles  or 2) mammals.

Following this, they had French and then music. After second lunch, we ended the day in a relaxing way with centers. By the end of the day, this is the time they have to learn while working together in groups, which are changed each time.

A few reminders for next week:

-Wednesday is Spirit Day. Dress your child in white/green clothing
-Thursday is the Reptile show
-Regular gym days will be in effect as of next week

Have a wonderful night!

Miss H.

March 1, 2012

Good afternoon,

Hi everyone my name is Mr. Norman Rojas as the students and teachers refer to me as “Mr. R”. I work closely as a classroom assistant for both classes of Ms. Padovan and Miss Husain’s.  In the first half of the morning I assist in Miss Padovan’s JK-B busy and vigorous class, and follow through with Miss Husain’s lively class.

In Ms. Husain’s class we reviewed our unit of inquiry in Science on the difference of Reptiles and Mammals, and as part of our reinforcement/ independent work we did an activity by cutting out pictures of mammals and reptiles and pasting it accordingly to its proper classification.

In Miss H class we do read aloud’s as well as silent readings habitually, and today we read “Just me in the tub” by Gina and Mayer.

If you have any inquiry or questions please feel free to speak to me during school hours.

Educationally yours,

Mr. Rojas

Wednesday 29 February 2012

Wacky Wednesday!

Today, we started off with a warm-up activity, which involved differentiating upper-case 'M' and lower-case 'm'. This was done by colouring lower-case 'm's in yellow and upper-case 'M's in blue. If this was done correctly, it would show a picture of an upper-case 'M'. We also did a worksheet about the sound of the letter "Ll". We concluded that there are many words that start with 'Ll' such as leaf, lion, lamp and lamb.

'Ladybug' also starts with the letter 'Ll' and this was the animal that we learned about today. We also learned and sang along to a ladybug song called "Ladybug, Ladybug." Everyone got creative by painting and making their own ladybugs, which are on display in the classroom.

We also had gym and French class today. We had story time and read a Winnie the Pooh book that was based on helping others including our friends, family and neighbours. Following second recess, we did centers which included daring, lego and puppets.

A few reminders:

-Tomorrow is the last day for re-registration for next year
-Tomorrow is the last day for pizza order forms/money for March
-Tomorrow is Casual Day. You know the drill!

Have a fantabulous night and safe driving, everyone!!!!

Tuesday 28 February 2012

Hello everyone,

Today began with circle time, where we discussed the things we did yesterday after school. Following this, we did some exercises that worked on comparing things that are 'more' and those that are 'less'. I read "Ten Little Tadpoles," a book that Jaiden donated to the school for the book drive. We also did some letter worksheets as well for the rest of the morning.

Following first lunch, we had gym with Mr. Browning and then we had story time with Mr. R. We had French and music with Mme. Stella and Mr. Moreno. For the most part, the boys and girls behaved well in these classes.

After second recess, we worked on sorting and math exercises. Today, we sorted sea shells, which came in different shapes, sizes, and colours. We sorted them according to these individual characteristics. We also sorted mini plastic cars/trucks/trains/planes according to a type of transportation/colour/size.

Just a few reminders:

-Tomorrow is a gym day
-Casual Day is on Thursday
-The last day for re-registration is on Thursday
-All monies/forms for the Reptile Show are due on Thursday
-Next Wednesday is Spirit Day for St. Patrick's Day. Please dress your child in as much white and/or green for this day to maximize the points they get for their houses!

Have a super, fantastic night!

Monday 27 February 2012

Marvelous Monday!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. During our morning circle time, I heard from many students that they did some pretty cool things over the past weekend. Following our communal sharing time, we worked on perfecting our understandings of patterns. We used pattern blocks to create patterns of different shapes and sizes. For math, we also completed a matching worksheet, where each student was required to match each sock to its correct partner.

I went over the basic characteristics of a reptile in order to prepare for our upcoming reptile show. We also watched a Magic School Bus episode that talked about reptiles and their importance to the planet. Following this, we had story time and read a Franklin book.

We had French and silent reading. Following second lunch, all the students settled down for story time with Mr. R. Then, we worked on letters and completed an activity based on the letter Ll. We also coloured our own "Itsy Bitsy Letter Mm" books to take home and read over. We finished the day with a sorting activity and story time.

A reminder that summative projects (research an animal) are due on March 6, 2012. Presentations, led by each student, will commence from March 6 and end on March 9.

-Casual Day is this Thursday

-Our book drive is still up and going. Thanks for all of the donations and please continue to bring in any books you have lying around the house!!!

-Spirit Day is on March 7. Please dress your child in green and/or white to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

Have a super night!!

Fantastical Friday!

Good afternoon,

Today we started off the day with convocation when all the winners of yesterday's speech contest were announced. Great job to everyone who participated. It was definitely a tough decision for the judges to choose a winner.

We also worked on some math readiness skills worksheets, which dealt with size and order (circle the object in the middle). We did a letter Kk collage and outlined the letter with coloured yarn. Later in the day, we had reading buddies with Ms. Chang's class. Everyone enjoys their special time with a student in her class!

Following this, we had French and then story time. We read "A Quiet Night In" by Jill Murphy.

After second lunch, we had centres, which included:

1) Writing centre
2) Play Doh letters
3) Building Blocks

A reminder that we are still continuing our book drive. So if you have any books at home you'd like to donate, that would be wonderful!!!

Have a great weekend, everybody!!!

This morning began well with all of the wonderful speeches by students in senior kindergarten to grade eight. As a school, we all gathered together to cheer on the students participating in this year's speech contest. Everyone did a great job and the winners will be announced during tomorrow's convocation ceremony.

Following the speeches, we got into language arts. We practiced writing the letter Mm and even learned a letter Mm song. We practiced sounding out the letter Mm and singing this song, along with the letter Kk song.

We also had centres:

1. Painting (landscape of their choice)
2. Math (counting activity and shapes magnets)
3. Language Arts (driving toy cars along big foam letters)

We also had story time and silent reading.

A note to all parents/guardians:

***Any snow day updates will be posted on the school website before 7 am.

Wednesday 22 February 2012

Good Afternoon, Everyone!

It was nice seeing all the boys and girls after the long weekend. I heard that they all had a great day with Mr. R. yesterday, which makes me very happy!

Today, we started off the day with circle time. I caught up with all the boys and girls about what they did over the long weekend. Many of us were very busy this weekend and did a lot of fun things!

After, we began with our third unit of inquiry and discussed a certain animal. Let me give you all a hint: it has black and white stripes......

Do you know what animal it is?

If you guessed a zebra, you are right!

We learned that zebra's are:
1) Are mammals
2) Have black and white stripes, which are good for scaring away bugs and confusing predators like lions
3) Love to eat grass
4) Live in Africa (Where Miss H. is from and was born!!!)

We made our own zebra craft and also did tracing of the word "zebra". We watched a clip of zebras and why their stripes are important. We also worked on patterns and did some pattern activities with blocks and worksheets as well. In order to encourage our book drive, we decorated our book drive box, which will be judged tomorrow in our box-decorating contest. To prepare ourselves for spring, we put lots of pretty foam butterflies and glitter on our box. It is very,  very pretty, I must say. We also read a book about feelings and discussed different feelings that we have and what to do about them. We also acted out different feelings as well.

We had French and gym today, which both went well with the teachers.

I hope everyone has a wonderful night and I will see you tomorrow!!!

Regards,

Miss H.

Thursday 16 February 2012

Tremendous Thursday!

Hello everyone,

Today, we started off the day with some shapes worksheets that also dealt with colours as well. Then, we worked on letters Jj and Kk. We listened and practiced our letter sounds song as well. For a treat, we watched thirty minutes of an animal movie called "The Dolphin."

After lunch, we had gym class and then we had reading buddies for the first time. Ms. Chang's grade 4/5 class came in for twenty minutes and partnered up with a JKA student. Everyone enjoyed this very, very much. We will definitely be doing this again in the near future. After, we had music class with Mr. Moreno.

Following second lunch, we did a fine motor exercise that involved weaving (heart template and yarn). We did this and then had convocation with all of the other classes/grades.

A reminder:

-There will be no school tomorrow or Monday

Have a great long weekend!!!!!

Miss H.

Wednesday 15 February 2012

Wonderful Wednesday!

Hello everyone,

Today we started off the day with a worksheet dealing with shapes. Each student was required to colour triangles in red and squares in blue. This worksheet, along with another helps with shape and colour recognition. After, we worked on letter tracing/formation (J and K). We started off with some tracing worksheets and then tried to write the letter 'Kk' on our own. Please continue to practice writing the letter 'Kk' this week with your child.

We also did a scissor-cutting exercise from our Abeka workbooks. We learned and watched a song, sung by Jack Hartman. This song is about the sounds that each letter makes. We listened to it first and then sang along to the song the second time. We also read a story together called "Alphabet Under Construction."

We had story time and Mr. R. read a funny book by Robert Munsch called "Alligator Baby." Everyone enjoyed this book very much. After lunch, we had our own mini gym class and played lily pad tag with coloured foam mats. We also learned how to draw an owl and cut out little own letters for a game we will be playing tomorrow in class.

A couple reminders:

-Tomorrow is gym day. Please dress your child in his/her gym uniform
-NO school on Friday and Monday

Enjoy your night and I will see you all tomorrow!

After, we had story time and read books about Valentine’s Day (which is tomorrow!!). We read “Clifford’s Valentine’s Day” and “Clifford, We Love You.” We also talked about the meaning of Valentine’s Day and how is it a special day to tell all of our family and friends how much we love them!
We also did some letter tracing worksheets before lunch time. We did a Sesame Street math/numbers worksheet on the number 6 as well. After lunch, we learned about reptiles. We learned that:
-Reptiles are cold-blooded (we are warm-blooded)
-They have scales
-Most of them lay eggs
-Reptiles include alligators, turtles, lizards, snakes and crocodiles
We also drew our favourite reptile on a mini reptile facts sheet. We made and cut our own bookmarks (based on snakes) to use in the future. Towards the end of the day, we made little Valentine’s Day love bugs in preparation for tomorrow!!

Happy 100th Day!!!

Good evening everyone,

I just would like to wish everyone a HAPPY 100th DAY of school!!!!!!!!!

Today, we started off the day with our convocation ceremonies. During this, we had a house competition. Since Valentine's Day is soon approaching, each house had to guess how many cinnamon hearts were in a container. Each house got three chances to guess. The winning house was kappa. Good job to everyone who competed!!!!

After our ceremonies, we practiced our song for the gala. We have practiced a lot and sound very, very good so we're all so excited for the big day tomorrow!!!!

We did some scissor cutting exercises and made/decorated a paper kite. In order to celebrate the hundredth day of school, we decorated "100th Day" headbands and also coloured in our very own "100 Animals" books to take home. We also had story time and read "100th Day Worries". We had French and silent reading.

Just a not for tomorrow:

-Please arrive for 6 pm tomorrow
-Please dress your child in red/white clothing. Beige pants can also be worn if red or white is not an option.

Have a great night!!!!

Miss H.

Thursday 9 February 2012

Terrrrrrrriffic Thursday!

Good afternoon everyone,

Today, we started off the day with letter worksheets. These worksheets had different letters that we have already learned about and traced in the past. They included vowels and consonants such as K and J. After, we got into our unit of inquiry surrounding animals and talked a little more about penguins. We each drew our own representation of a penguin and then I came around the table and wrote each student's favourite facts they learned about penguins.

After, we had a penguin race with "eggs" (balloons) between our legs. This was to show how male Emperor penguins walk while holding their baby egg between their feet. This was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed pretending to be a penguin!

We also talked about another arctic animal... it's white, big, cute and furry.... if you guessed a polar bear, then you're right!

This is what we learned:
1. Polar bears are the largest bears in the world.
2. They love to eat seals.
3. Polar bears love to swim (and they are very good at it!).
4. The only things that can hurt polar bears are us, so we must make sure to take care and respect these animals.

We also did a worksheet about Polar Bears. We did some scissor cutting exercises with shapes and also some fine motor skills activities. We also had story time and read books about Valentine's Day. We had music, but no French because we had another dress rehearsal after first lunch.

A reminder:
-The gala starts at 6 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012. PLEASE dress your child in red/white clothing ONLY for their performance. I know some parents have had some trouble finding red/white pants, so you CAN dress your child in beige pants!
-Spirit Day is on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Colours are red, white and pink.
-Next Friday is a PD Day. NO school on that day or the following Monday.

Thanks and have a great night!!!

Miss H.

Wednesday 8 February 2012

Wonderful Wednesday!

Today, we started off the day by talking about a certain animal that lives in cold climates. I will give you all a few hints:

1. It only lives in Antarctica.
2. It LOVES eating fish.
3. It is especially cute when it waddles.

If you guessed a penguin, then you were right! We talked about these facts about a penguin and, most specifically, talked about emperor penguins. We learned that these penguins only live in Antarctica and that the father holds the baby egg while the mommy goes to get food. We learned that the father holds and keeps the baby egg warm in between his feet so he has to be extra careful when he walks!

We did a penguin craft, using heart shapes to create our own "pet" penguins. We also did a worksheet Pp" for Penguin.

We had gym in the morning. After lunch, we had dress rehearsals for the concert, where the whole school got to see each other's performances. Everyone did so well at this rehearsal!

We ended the day with story time and silent reading.
